A Wedding I'll Never Forget

In May 2026, I had the incredible honour of photographing one of the most meaningful photoshoots—my nephew Caedence's wedding to his beautiful wife Emma. As a family photographer, I'm fortunate to witness so many milestone moments, but documenting the wedding of someone I've loved since the day he was born was something entirely different. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mayne Island, one of British Columbia's beautiful Gulf Islands, their wedding was intimate, joyful, and deeply personal. Their wedding was also a family collaboration: Caedence's father, Brad, officiated the ceremony, while my sister Lalainia poured her creativity into setting up every detail of the décor. Aurielle, Caed’s sister sang and Caed’s nana Elaine played piano. My role was to preserve it all through photographs—a family of creatives, each contributing our own gifts to celebrate two remarkable people. It was an unforgettable day , but even more importantly, it was a day filled with love, lots of giggles, and family and friends. (scroll to continue...)

Caedence arrived on June 1, 2003. It honestly feels like yesterday.

One of my most vivid memories is also my very first memory of him. There was a sudden, heavy silence in the delivery room because he didn't breathe for what felt like an eternity—probably only twenty seconds. Time seemed to stop. Then the doctors and nurses worked quickly, and suddenly the most beautiful cry filled the room.

I'll never forget that moment.

Even then, it somehow felt as though the world was waiting for him. Looking back now, I can honestly say the world is a better place because Caedence is in it. That brief silence carried the weight of every possibility his life would one day hold. (scroll to continue...)

Today, he stands 6'5", but what makes him remarkable has nothing to do with his height. He is one of the kindest, happiest, and most optimistic people I know. He has a genuine warmth that draws people in, and he cares for Emma with a commitment and steadiness that is striking for someone only 23 years old. (scroll to continue...)

Together, they are thoughtful, intelligent, and wonderfully unapologetically themselves. Emma is studying to become a math teacher, while Caedence is pursuing a career in soccer coaching. Watching them together, it's easy to see they are building a marriage on friendship, respect, laughter, and purpose.

Their wedding reflected exactly who they are.

Throughout the ceremony, they exchanged giggles, playful glances, and moments of joy. Nothing felt staged or overly formal. It was honest, relaxed, and filled with genuine happiness. Their authenticity was contagious. (scroll to continue...)

Then came the dancing.

I've rarely experienced an evening with so much uninhibited joy. Every single young person seemed to throw themselves wholeheartedly onto the dance floor. There was no self-consciousness, no holding back—just pure celebration. Their energy inspired everyone else, regardless of age, to join in.

It struck me how often, as Canadians, we can be reserved. We worry about looking silly or standing out. But not this group. They embraced the moment with everything they had, celebrating each other with complete freedom and wholehearted enthusiasm.

Mayne Island seems to have a way of encouraging connection. Away from the pace of the city, surrounded by nature and the sea, people slow down. Conversations linger, hugs last a little longer, and celebrations seem to unfold more naturally. It's one of the many reasons I believe Gulf Island weddings are so memorable—not simply because of the scenery, but because of how the setting allows people to truly enjoy one another. As both an aunt and a photographer, this wedding will always hold a special place in my heart.
