Winter in Vancouver often gets a reputation for being rainy and grey, but if timed right it offers unique opportunities for stunning outdoor family photoshoots. The crisp air, soft natural light, gorgeous mountainous backdrops, and occasional snow create a beautiful setting that can make family portraits quite unique. We recently had the chance to work with a wonderful extended family who embraced the season / generated heater and all at the shoot!! We did have to do a few jumping jacks to stay warm!

Why Choose Winter for Your Family Photoshoot in Vancouver

Many families hesitate to schedule outdoor photos during winter, worried about cold weather or gloomy skies. Yet, Vancouver’s winter climate is milder than many expect, and the season brings several advantages for photography:
Soft, diffused light: Overcast skies act like a natural diffuser, reducing harsh shadows and creating flattering light for portraits.
Unique seasonal colors: Evergreen trees, frosted leaves, and occasional snow add texture and contrast to photos.
Cozy wardrobe options: Winter layers, scarves, hats, and boots add visual interest and warmth to images.
Less crowded locations: Popular parks and outdoor spots are quieter in winter, allowing for more intimate and relaxed sessions where we are not competing to use the same area
This combination makes winter an excellent time for outdoor family photoshoots in Vancouver, especially when you plan carefully and dress appropriately.
Planning Your Winter Family Photoshoot
Preparation is key to a successful winter photoshoot. Here are some practical tips to help your family enjoy the experience and get the best results:
Dress for Comfort and Style
Layering is essential. This family did an incredible job of this!! Encourage your family to wear warm clothes that also look good on camera. Coordinated but not perfectly matching outfits work best. Think neutral tones with pops of color,, like this family did with their gorgeous shades of blue and the complimentary tan and cream neutrals, plus cozy sweaters, scarves and textured fabrics like wool added warmth and texture to the photos.

Pick a Scenic Location
Vancouver AND the lower mainland offers many beautiful outdoor spots that are interesting in the winter. Some favourites include:
Pitt Lake in Maple Ridge is mountainous(snowy this time of year), as seen in this shoot, but also has interesting meadow warm grass tones that compliment the contrasting cool tones of the mountains and the blues in this families outfits
Stanley Park: Evergreen trees and seawall views provide a classic backdrop.
Queen Elizabeth Park: Winter blooms and city views add charm.
Lynn Canyon Park: Mossy forests and suspension bridges create a natural, adventurous vibe.
Local beaches: Driftwood and winter skies make for dramatic coastal portraits.

Prepare for Weather Conditions
Bring blankets, hot drinks, generated heater(as this family did) and hand warmers to keep everyone comfortable between shots. If snow is forecasted, embrace it! Snowflakes add a magical touch, but be ready to protect your equipment and keep everyone safe on slippery paths.
Winter photoshoots can become a cherished tradition, documenting your family’s story in a unique and beautiful way.
